GUIDED TRAILS
We offer 4x4 transport to access REGUA’s more distant trails, many of which lie in the higher parts of the reserve and provide opportunities to encounter a different range of bird species. For these outings, visitors may hire our experienced local bird guide, Adilei Carvalho, or we can arrange for one of our forest rangers to accompany you along the chosen trail.
Day visitors can also arrange to walk the Waterfall/Green Trail with one of our guides. This must be pre-booked, there is a charge per group (up to a maximum of 10) payable on arrival to the guide. The meeting place is the Visitor Centre.

This scenic and moderate difficulty trail passes through well established secondary forest into selectively logged primary humid evergreen forest with a beautiful waterfall. We recommend a whole day birding this trail with a suggested start of 07:00, and taking a packed lunch to eat at the waterfall. This part of the reserve has access for research and booked guided walks only. Keeping the trail quiet and clean, respecting its wildlife and biodiversity is essential to maintain the balance of the forest and protect the birds, mammals and other animals that inhabit this area, such as Southern Muriqui, Puma and Lowland tapir. Beware the rocks around the waterfall are extremely slippery – please take care. Day Visitors: Booking is essential at any time of the week upon payment of a fee to one of our guides.

RED/ELFIN FOREST TRAIL

Post Color: Red
Starting point: Casa Pesquisa
Difficulty: Hard
Length: 8 km
Duration: 7 hours
Altitude: 1000 meters
What's good to bring: Drinking water, appropriate shoes, snack or packed lunch, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and raincoat.
Access: Only open to lodge guests. It is recommended to start this trail very early, as it is a considerable distance and transport is needed.
This is the most demanding trail in the reserve and is recommended for visitors used to walking. The trail begins at around 70 metres above sea level, at Casa Pesquisa, following a path that gradually advances before becoming increasingly steep as it enters deeper forest. As the climb continues, the trail passes through one of the best-preserved areas of REGUA, where Southern woolly spider monkeys (Muriquis) and Pumas inhabit. It is also an excellent route for observing a wide range of bird species, particularly in the early morning. The solitary tinamou and blue-bellied parrot can be found on this trail. At its highest point, you can see across the last valley before the mountains of Teresópolis, and also parts of Cachoeiras de Macacu municipality. The vegetation changes noticeably: low, sturdy trees covered in orchids and bromeliads signal the elfin forest, a rare and captivating habitat that gives the trail its name. The trail reaches close to 1,000 metres of altitude, rewarding the effort with cool mountain air and beautiful scenery. The return follows the same path downhill. Visitors are advised to carry plenty of drinking water, as this is a long and demanding walk.

CASA ANIBAL/4X4

After leaving the vehicle by the road (road leading to the Green/Waterfall trail), the walk begins across open pasture, passing over a small stream before entering a section of restored lowland forest planted by REGUA in 2010 called “Quebra-pau”. This restored area marks the gateway to the higher parts of the reserve and includes a small wetland that has become a refuge for tapirs, thanks to its natural connection with the surrounding uplands. From here, the trail advances steadily into well-established secondary forest, following an old ridge path that eventually leads to the remains of Aníbal’s former house at 350 metres above sea level. This area used to be covered by banana plantations till the late 1990’s.
